2012 Annual Community Yard Sale - Volunteer Request

Dear Neighbor,

Please let me know if you’re interested in taking care of the publicity for this year’s community yard sale. The “benefit” that comes with the position is that the publicity coordinator gets to pick the date. We’ll cover the costs of the newspaper classified ad and some signs.

I’ve had a number of people asking about a yard sale for this year so I know that there is interest.

You’ll note that Kent Query, our outgoing Vice President, has left the board of directors after over eight years of service. He is still in the community but he thought it best to step down for a while. Always one to volunteer, Kent has pitched in for some of our harder jobs. Please let him know that you appreciate his service when you see him around.

2012 Annual Meeting Summary

Dear Neighbor,

I wanted to follow our annual meeting with a summary of the evening for all. We greatly appreciate those of you who took the time to join us and discuss issues related to the neighborhood. I think that we all agree that Clarks Crossing is a great place to live and we enjoyed hearing from you. For those of you who were not able to attend, we missed you. The election results are not included in this note and will be forwarded after our monthly board meeting.

Once again, I’d like to thank all our volunteers who helped out their neighbors. Special thanks to Eduard and Tatiana van der Noordaa for making both the yard sale and the picnic a reality last year. If it were not for their efforts, and the significant number of people who helped with the picnic, these very worthwhile events would not have happened.

As promised we also discussed a number of issues affecting the neighborhood. In general these are long-term issues or projects that you already know about.

Northern Virginia Park Authority’s W&OD trail extension to Meadowlark Botanical Gardens is continuing to move forward. It’s currently in the county permitting process and then will move to the contracting phase. I’ll keep you updated of any new developments as we become aware. While we were lucky with a mild winter this year, you should not have forgotten about the number of times many of our residents lost power in years past. Dominion Virginia Power (DVP) replaced most of the feeder line along Meadowlark Road underground last year but stopped short of the last hundred yards of the intersection with Abbey Oak Road. The remaining overhead line feeds residents on Meadowlark, Abbey Oak, Fosbak Lane, and portions of Batten Hollow. Dominion is now working phase two of the project to place the rest of the line underground. This is the line that continues to run along Meadowlark across Abbey Oak Road. The project is currently in DVP’s engineering department and could start as early as the end of this year. If asked, I urge your support for this final step to prevent future occurrences of the extended power losses that we experienced in 2009 and 2010.

Fairfax County recognizes the risk of the area’s unchecked deer population and has developed a significant wildlife control program largely through means of controlled hunting. The program reduced the local deer population by 977 deer last year. This past year Fairfax County relied on their archery program in our area which used a selected qualified group to conduct discreet, effective, and safe deer management off W & OD Trail, Clark’s Crossing Park, and Lahey Lost Valley. There were no sharpshooter hunts in our area this year. More information concerning the county’s wildlife control program can be found at: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/living/wildlife/management/

Dulles Metro . . . or at least Metro to Weihle Avenue is still scheduled to complete by late 2013. Their website has a wealth of information http://www.dullesmetro.com/ and has a number of options to keep you updated.

Finally, I’d be remiss if I did not take this opportunity to pitch a request for volunteers to pitch in. Whether it’s a pet project that you would like to make a reality or one of our annual events, we’d love to hear from you. We were pleased at the attendance at the annual meeting and even more so when Mark Tremblay, one of our newest neighbors, stepped forward to help with the picnic. Even a few hours can make a difference!

Just a friendly reminder for the association's annual meeting on TUESDAY, APRIL 10, 2011 at 8:00PM. We will hold the meeting in the cafeteria at the Wolftrap Elementary School on Beulah Road.

Part of the Annual Meeting involves elections for two board positions. You should have received the ballot last month. As a reminder as to how our process works, the Association elects two board members at each annual meeting for three-year terms, and the board elects annual officers at its April board meeting. If you can’t attend the meeting please vote by proxy as outlined on your ballot.

I plan on providing updates on several issues of interest including the W&OD trail extension to Meadowlark Botanical Gardens, Dominion Virginia Power reliability, and the Fairfax County Deer Management Program.

The Association's Annual meeting will be held TUESDAY, APRIL 10, 2011 at 8:00PM. We will hold the meeting in the cafeteria at the Wolftrap Elementary School on Beulah Road.

The Association again announces the annual election of board officers, to take place at the Annual Meeting, which is scheduled for Tuesday, April 10, 2011 at 8:00pm. The Nominating Committee has recommended candidates for the two open positions. The terms for these positions will expire in 2015.

Recent Vehicle Break-ins - Fosbak Drive

Dear Neighbor,

One of our neighbors reported that at least three families had their vehicles on Fosbak Drive broken into last week (Thursday overnight to early Friday morning).

Two of the vehicles were unlocked and had small change or nothing taken. One had a GPS, Bluetooth, etc. stolen, and reported the thefts to the police.

Volunteers

Dear Neighbor,

We’re looking for association homeowners who are willing to help out where needed. Typical projects include setting a date and advertising our annual yard sale or orchestrating our fall picnic. Additionally, if you have a project that you would like to initiate in the neighborhood you could take that on, pending board approval of course.

Finally, we are also seeking people interested in serving on our board. The terms of two members expire each year. The time commitment is not what you may think and it’s a great opportunity to stayed “plugged in” to the community. Please consider even if you’ve served before, we could always use a “historical” perspective.

Community Update: 2011 Annual Assessment

Dear Neighbor,

Many of you have contacted me wondering if you had missed the bill for the association’s annual assessment. You have not missed your bill and for this year we will not be sending one out. We’ve managed through this year with our existing funds and the board decided to skip this year and send out the 2012 assessment early next year.

One of the items we had planned for this year was a complete repainting of the curb numbers. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, our contractor fell through and we felt that it was too late in the season to pursue. The cooler fall and more harsh winter weather would have likely worn away a significant number of the fresh replacements. We will revisit the curb painting in the spring.

Finally, we have delayed sending out the new directories due to the significant turnover of homes in the neighborhood. I think that the movement has settled and we will try to get the updated version to you shortly.

Community Update: Deer Management and Picnic

Dear Neighbor,

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everybody that helped make the community picnic a success last weekend. While the rather strong rains did throw us off a bit with the one week delay, Eduard van der Noordaa stepped up and pulled it off. By all accounts we had a solid turnout and everyone, especially the younger set, had a great time.

We'd be remiss if I didn't acknowledge everyone who worked to put it together. Bruce Byrum, Bechir Kassar, Bob Lunn, Tatiana van der Noorda, Molly Peffer, and Anne Schaffner. Special thanks go out to Penny Tsiaoushis and Amanda Ghobadi, our high school volunteers that worked with the younger set, and Sandy Hogge who, once again, opened her yard and house to the entire neighborhood. I'm told that this was the 26th consecutive picnic that Sandy has hosted for us. Please take the time to pass on your appreciation when you meet these neighbors next.

On another very high interest note, the Fairfax County Deer Management program restarts this month with activity in our neighborhood planned to start as early as tomorrow. The following summary was extracted from Hunter Mill Supervisor, Cathy Hudgin's, last highlights newsletter :

An Archery program hunt will be conducted at Difficult Run Stream Valley Park, Clarks Crossing Park and Lahey Lost Valley Park from September 24 to February 11. During this time, a qualified Archery Group will conduct deer management activity in authorized areas within the park. All activity will be conducted from elevated tree stands located at least 100 feet from park property lines and 50 feet from established park trails. The park will not be closed to patrons during this time. Sunday hunting is not permitted in Virginia. Program signs will be posted at park entrances and on trails informing visitors of this deer management activity and asking visitors to remain on established trails.

An archery group is comprised of experienced hunters who have demonstrated superior marksmanship and skill. An ethical standard has been established since the Archery Program began and is strictly enforced. Archery groups are closely monitored by the Fairfax County Wildlife Biologist office, Animal Services Division of the Fairfax County Police Department.

The deer population in Northern Virginia has exceeded the carrying capacity that our remaining native habitats can sustain. Many parks have little or no remaining vegetation from the ground up to five feet. Native plants and the wildlife that depend on them have been adversely impacted by this damage to the parkland habitat. In addition, Virginia has moved from 8th to 5th in the nation for deer-vehicle collisions statistics. It is estimated that 1 in 138 residents will be involved in a deer-vehicle collision. Fairfax County employs all the tools available through the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries to control the deer population; archery, man-aged hunts and sharpshooting.
